The birthstone for January is Garnet.
Garnet: the name derives from the Latin word ‘granum’ meaning grain and the gemstone is thousands of years of years old. It is commonly known to be red; however, it can also come in other shades of yellow, orange, green and very rarely blue. The gemstone was often used in Roman and Greek jewellery and other decorative wear especially as it was seen to be a protector; it is even believed that Noah’s lantern used to safely steer the Ark at night was made from garnet. The gemstone is deep in colour, durable (perfect for jewellery) and is therefore very popular.
